Day by day
Arrival in Beijing | Meet the city in its hutongs and evening light
Meet your driver on arrival and settle into your hotel. Later, stroll around Shichahai and Houhai, crossing Yinding Bridge and following the small hutong lanes. Courtyard walls, shade trees, bicycles and tiny bars offer a close-to-home introduction to Beijing. A welcome dinner can feature noodles with soybean paste, palace snacks or contemporary Beijing cuisine.
The Forbidden City and Central Axis | The world of imperial China
Visit Tiananmen Square and the Palace Museum with an English-speaking guide. Rather than rushing through every hall, focus on the great ceremonial spaces, the emperor’s living quarters and the Imperial Garden. From Jingshan Park, look across the Central Axis and the planned geometry of the capital. Later, try calligraphy or ink painting and take home a small work marked with your Chinese name or a travel wish. Peking duck is a fitting dinner choice.
Temple of Heaven, tai chi and hutongs | From imperial ritual to everyday Beijing
Begin at the Temple of Heaven, where local residents gather for morning exercise, singing and tai chi. Join a gentle introductory tai chi session to explore breath, balance and a few basic movements. In the afternoon, walk deeper into Dongsi, Nanluoguxiang or the Drum and Bell Tower area; a courtyard visit may be paired with dumpling making, a local snack, opera-mask painting or kite making. An evening of Peking opera or Kunqu can be arranged.
Mutianyu Great Wall | A real stretch of Chinese history
Travel by private vehicle to Mutianyu, about 70 kilometres from central Beijing. Take the cable car up, then enjoy an easy 1.5 to 2-hour walk with time for photographs, mountain views and the guide’s explanation of watchtowers, defence and Ming border history. Return to the city in the afternoon; a simple countryside lunch may be arranged near the wall, followed by a relaxed evening in Beijing.
Summer Palace and contemporary Beijing | Garden, city and departure
Walk the Summer Palace along Kunming Lake, the Long Corridor and Longevity Hill, where painted beams, water, architecture and landscape come together as a royal garden. With a later flight, add 798 Art Zone or the Guomao and Sanlitun districts for a contemporary perspective. Your driver then takes you to the airport for departure.
