Why this journey

Not the checklist. The Beijing you have not met yet.

You will have room to look closer: at a temple’s colour and ritual, at the meaning carried by an old school, at the texture of a wall painting, and at how a former steelworks became a new part of the city.
Faith & learning

Yonghe Temple and the Imperial Academy open a window onto Tibetan Buddhism, Confucian education and everyday Chinese ideas of learning and prayer.

Art & making

Choose seal carving, woodblock rubbing or thread-bound bookmaking, and leave with something you made rather than another souvenir you simply bought.

Old industry, new city

At Shougang Park, blast furnaces, Olympic architecture and public space show how Beijing is carrying its industrial memory forward.

Day by day

DAY 1

Arrival in Beijing | Begin with the old city at night

Your driver meets you at the airport and takes you to your hotel. After a pause to settle in, take an easy evening walk around Qianmen, Dashilar or Xianyukou. Compared with the brighter shopping streets, these lanes keep more old shopfronts, guild-hall traces and hutong texture. Choose refined Beijing cuisine or a welcome dinner built around local snacks.

DAY 2

Yonghe Temple · Imperial Academy · Wudaoying | Faith, learning and everyday life

At Yonghe Temple, look beyond the ritual of incense: your guide helps you read the architecture, colour, statues and the relationship between the Qing court and Tibetan Buddhism. Walk on to Guozijian and Confucius Temple, once the highest school in imperial China. In the afternoon choose seal carving, woodblock rubbing or thread-bound bookmaking, then spend the evening among bookshops, tea rooms and design stores in Wudaoying Hutong.

DAY 3

Fahai Temple · Shougang Park | From mineral pigment to steel and renewal

Fahai Temple is modest in scale but preserves extraordinary Ming-dynasty murals. A specialist explanation brings out the mineral pigments, clothing details, religious narratives and the care required to protect them. Later, Shougang Park changes the subject completely: blast furnaces, cooling towers, coal corridors and Olympic structures show how a steel base has become a cultural and public district. Stay for an industrial-style dinner or a seasonal digital-art programme.

DAY 4

Beijing → Gubei Water Town | Northern water town and Simatai by night

Travel by private vehicle to Miyun, approximately 2.5–3 hours depending on traffic. Check into a boutique hotel inside Gubei Water Town, then walk without rushing through bridges, theatres, dye workshops and mountain lanes. Choose a craft session such as lantern, kite, paper-cutting or palace-lamp making. After dinner, take the cable car or shuttle toward Simatai. The lit ridge and the town roofs below create a completely different Great Wall memory from a daytime visit.

DAY 5

Gubei Water Town → Beijing airport | Leave with space

Take a quiet morning walk before the crowds arrive. If your flight is later and your energy allows, add a short viewpoint walk, a slow breakfast, Miyun Reservoir or a light village lunch on the way back. Airport transfer is planned around your departure time.
